Chile Festivals-For the Love of Chili
Chili or chile? Many people get confused over the spelling of this wonderful concoction and rightly so because there is a bit of confusion in the chili world about it. Chile usually refers to those beautiful chile pods we grow and add to our chili recipes. Chili represents the mixture of chiles, meat, liquids, etc. that are cooked together for our eating pleasure. Many people will argue that chili is the Americanized version of chile, and these folks use chile to represent both the pods and the dish cooked with them.
Whatever spelling choice you make, fall is the season when people not only start pulling out those winter sweaters, but they begin dusting off those chili cookbooks to make the one food that is sure to keep you warm on those chilly nights ahead. Chili is one comfort food that is celebrated every year through various festivals, chili cook-offs, and even right in your own kitchen with the creation of new chili recipes to enjoy.
Many chili festivals include chili tastings and contests for the best chili around. These celebrations usually include some type of musical venues and a variety of beers and other beverages to wash down all of that fiery chili you’ll be eating. Some chili festivals even have cornbread cook-offs to accompany the various chili recipes that are being judged. Whether your tastes are fiery, hot, mild, or even vegetarian, you are sure to find a chili that will suit your taste buds at a chili festival.
Now that we know you need to attend a chili festival, the question remains as to where to go and which celebration to attend. One of the most popular chile festivals in the United States in New Mexico’s Hatch Chile Festival. This is definitely a celebration of all things chili in the small town of Hatch. There is a chile pod competition, chili cook-off, and even the crowning of a Chile Queen each year. The Hatch Chile Festival takes place during the Labor Day weekend every year.
While the Hatch Chile Festival has been an ongoing event for years drawing nearly 30,000 visitors each year, the city of Kingston, NY will host its first Kingston Chili Cook-off Festival this year. Their categories for chili recipe competition include Fire Department, Restaurant, Vegetarian/Organic, and Hudson Valley Chili.
Stone Mountain, Georgia, also has its very own chili cook-off festival every year in the fall. Many teams compete in the competition, working hard every year to improve their chili recipes so they can be the winner in all the tasting competitions. You can wrap up your big day of chili tasting under the stars while watching Stone Mountain’s famous laser show. It’s a chili celebration you won’t want to miss.
If one of these chili festivals doesn’t tickle your fancy, why not start one of your very own? Invite a few friends over to watch football or a movie, and tell them to use their own chili recipes to cook up a batch of chili to bring to your cook-off. You provide the place, utensils, beverages, and Voila! Your very own chili celebration has begun! Print out voting cards for everyone to vote on their favorite chili, and maybe you can even come up with a creative prize for the chili recipe that has the most votes.
Check with your local Chamber of Commerce or Visitor’s Bureau to find out when a chili festival is scheduled near you.
